Some Observations

Today’s Pictures

I decided to head northeast to the edge of the area where my ticket was valid; that was the Blankenburg stop. It turns out I took several pictures that seemed attractive at the time, but the result was not all that great. That means there aren’t a lot of pictures today.

When I boarded the train this morning, a small Dixieland band (trumpet, a couple of saxophones, and one other) started playing “Hello, Dolly.” A slightly drunk guy in a hat was dancing next to them. It was great fun; the band left the train a couple of stops later.

Blankenburg is a very much residential area. There are a couple of pictures from there, and then I walked back towards downtown until I got to the Pankow station (from which I took the S-Bahn back to Friedrichstraße).

The Election

No, as a matter of fact, I am not getting tired of seeing these posters.

This is the first time I saw a lot of posters from those bastards in AfD (a far-right party that would have felt right at home in 1933):

Refugees shouting; text: Asylchaos beenden! End the asylum chaos!
German flag in background; text: Unser Land zuerst! Our country first!
Photo of woman alone at night at train station. Text: “Frauen und Mädchen schützen!” Protect women and girls!
Woman doctor with needle: Freiheit verteidigen! Defend freedom!

Then there’s the FDP, which is a liberal party, whose slogan appears to be “Streitbar in Europa” (Controversial in Europe).

Picture of candidate: Wirtschaft liebt Freiheit so wie Du. Business loves freedom just like you.
Europa lebt von Freiheit. Nicht von Rechtlinien. Europe lives by freedom. Not by guidelines.
Migration steuern. Sonst tun es die Falschen. Control migration. Otherwise the wrong people will do it.

And posters from other parties:

Abstieg oder Aufbruch? Decline or advancement?
Mach Nazis ein Kreuz durch die Rechnung. Thwart Nazis’ plans.
Wählen rettet Leben Voting saves lives.
Not exactly a political poster, but a get-out-the-vote poster from Oatly (a company that makes oat milk).

Various Signage

Leading off with what I think may be the best sticker ever.

Johnny Cash drawn in style of portraits on US currency; text reads “In Cash We Trust / The Man in Black”
Jobs.ass-berlin.org That’s the Albert Schweitzer Stiftung (Foundation).
Plakatt statt Screen This company wants you to use “Poster instead of Screen” for advertising.
signage veggie Vegetarian ravioli: “I’m veggie now”
signage circus poster This circus seems so totally wrong on every possible level. “For the little ones...the biggest”
Dog, cat, and rabbit with bandages around legs and ear. Clever logo for a veterinary clinic.
Besuchen sie das Bürokratie-Museum, bevor es abgeschafft wird. Visit the Bureaucracy Museum. Before it is abolished.
Brilliantly clever design here. Part of a display honoring the 75th anniversary of the Grundgesetz (The Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany).
Typewriter with ribbon in colors of German flag (Black/Red/Yellow)

Food

Had a vegan burger and sweet potato fries at Swing Kitchen near Friedrichstraße (website in German); didn’t get a picture of it. It was very good, though (expensive, but I’m on vacation so I may as well splurge). Dessert was a raspberry brownie.

Miscellanea

The REWE market at the train station has a plastic/glass bottle recycling machine. I got 0.50€ back for my two bottles. Such a deal.

This gadget that I brought along with me is oh-so-convenient. You plug it into a European socket and you get two US outlets plus two USB charging ports.
