Hong Kong–June 5, 2023

As is my custom, I took one of the subway lines all the way to the end; in this case to the Tsuen Wan station. If you are ever in Hong Kong and want to see a place that is definitely not on the “top 10 tourist must-see” list, this is it.

walkway

One of the many walkways connecting buildings. Very convenient for not having to wait at traffic lights.

The best way to describe the neighborhood is working-class and gritty. For example, people dry clothes on the balcony and use umbrellas to shelter the clothes from the rain:

There are lots of fruit stands:

And other stores. The Hau Tei Square Hawker Bazaar has a lot of clothing-related wares; the spools of thread and the box of buttons caught my eye:

If you want fresh fish, you can definitely get it here:

As I was walking around, I saw a cat outside a store—first cat I’ve seen on this trip. It let me pet it. My day was officially complete :)

Food

For lunch, I stopped at a place that had quite a few people in line. I got a plate with vegetables and pork. It looked great, but it was lukewarm and very greasy. Oh well; so much for “if the locals go there, it must be great food.”

Dinner was prawns with garlic and vermicelli at a little place near the Temple Street night market. It had lots of garlic, and it was very good indeed.

Architecture

Building with vertical brown and yellow striping
cats painted on side of building
building with angular staircases

The staircases caught my eye for some reason.

Cylindrical column on side of building painted as a green bamboo tree with pandas climbing it
Support column painted with bird and flowering branches

(Not a building, but a freeway support column)

trapezoidal building

Unless it’s some sort of optical illusion, this building is trapezoidal.

Miscellanea

I have no idea what these plants are (who do I look like? Luther Burbank?), but they were attractive.

That’s one way to keep people from stealing oranges from the tree.

Signage

juxtaposed signs

This juxtaposition just seemed interesting.

sol bar lets cheers
sign with pictures of desserts

This company has outlets all over the city. I’m going to try one of their chocolate tarts tomorrow.

red and green logo

I liked this mall’s logo. The mall itself was nothing special.

anti covid poster

It struck me as weird to see the virus wearing a mask. Go figure.

Logo for Loupe jewelry; the o looks like a jeweler's loupe.

Clever logo for a jewelry store.
