New York City–June 3, 2022

I walked up to the DeKalb Market Hall for lunch. Google maps said to take 3rd Avenue, and honestly, there isn’t a much less inviting area for tourism; it’s all business/industrial zoned from 36th Street up to 17th Street, and not much better after that. So most of these pictures are wall art and stickers.

Yellow sticker with black print, looks just like a Best Buy sticker but has the text KEST GAK
Graffiti mural of man holding book, words NORMAL and HP HAVE FAITH
Silhouettes of man lifting a weight overhead

This was at the front of a CrossFit studio

Cartoon barbells, kettle bells, and weight plates exercising

And this one was on the side

Faded sign on brick wall: Godfrey Propeller Adjusting

This faded sign shows a rather interesting business.

Narrow, steep 15-step staircase to front door of a house

This architecture will not win any accessibility awards.

These two comprise one mural.

Red ribbon with text in white: Arm yourself with the knowledge to think for yourself
Young women, one holding diploma, another a paintbrush with a strip of paint reading “We are not government issue”. Multiple parachutes in background with text such as Our humanity, our futures, our dreams

More stuff...

Gorilla Dave’s. At left, Gorilla Jane; at right, Gorilla Dave (with line art of two gorillas)
Cartoon poppy seed bagel wearing a blue baseball cap
Letters AAPI in shape of people, with pro-Asian-American text. Example: Asian-American The hyphen is not a divider It’s a bridge
Bust of Beethoven wearing a yarmulke
Graffitti of girl with red bow in blue hair
Paint peeling away from chipped wood at corner of building
Eagle in red, white, and blue. Text: Kentile Floors
Priority Mail sticker on which someone has drawn two sleeping cats
Cartoon mouse with large eyes. Text underneath is roman numerals IV VI III
Sticker with text “you are beautiful”
Top half of sticker has LEX! in white on black; bottom half has upside-down LEX! (reading right to left) in black on white
Cellar door painted bright orange, with orange traffic cone on top

This place must have had really big problems with people parking over the cellar door entrance.

Finally, something different!

Manhattan skyscrapers in distance

Back to stickers and murals.

Sticker with four men in sunglasses; text: Shit dogs reborn
Sticker: SIMPLY SAY HEY
Pink and red wall mural showing disco ball champagne glass, and champagne bottle
Whimsical cat and dog in front of a house. Text: Lickers n Sniffers Pet Services

Not sure how attractive a name this is.

Wall painting of multi-colored flowers
Large planter of pink and red roses
Wall art memorial to Kobe Bryant and daughter Gianna; Kobe is reclining with a basketball under his head

I walked back to the hotel via 5th Avenue (Brooklyn, not Manhattan), and it was much nicer, with lots of shops, restaurants, etc.

Tape cassette labeled Brooklyn Vibes, with tape spilling out of cartridge, spelling “it’s all good”
Sign for R & A Cycles with logo in form of a stylized bicycle rider in racing helmet

I like the logo at the left.

Building with faded blue paint on brickwork
Green construction fence with paintings of swans
Mural of man texting while driving; Justice (holding scales with pedestrians in one pan and car in other) is scowling at man
Sign with letter “b” between two metal braces; text VIETNAMESE GASTROPUB beneath
Sign for MAYA Taqueria, with mayan mask at left
Menu for Thai restaurant with cloth strips on cover, and a silver metal elephant on top of the cloth

Menu for a Thai restaurant. These must have been fabulously expensive, but it definitely attracts your eye.

Mural; people made from primary colored geometric shapes dancing, drinking, and playing musical instruments.
Cowboy sitting on bull, facing backwards
Painting of state of Louisiana with crawfish
Poster: LOOK AT ME MAMA! MOMMY LOOK!

The small tear-off strips at the bottom all read “ARE YOU MAD?”

Wall mural: boy with basketball, man with baseball cap. text:“What can be believed can be achieved”
Mural: Woman with dog at left, older man in glasses at right. Text: Square Stores Mens Wear Park Slope Brooklyn
