Hong Kong–June 5, 2023
As is my custom, I took one of the subway lines all the way to the end; in this case to the Tsuen Wan station. If you are ever in Hong Kong and want to see a place that is definitely not on the “top 10 tourist must-see” list, this is it.
The best way to describe the neighborhood is working-class and gritty. For example, people dry clothes on the balcony and use umbrellas to shelter the clothes from the rain:
There are lots of fruit stands:
And other stores. The Hau Tei Square Hawker Bazaar has a lot of clothing-related wares; the spools of thread and the box of buttons caught my eye:
If you want fresh fish, you can definitely get it here:
As I was walking around, I saw a cat outside a store—first cat I’ve seen on this trip. It let me pet it. My day was officially complete :)

Food
For lunch, I stopped at a place that had quite a few people in line. I got a plate with vegetables and pork. It looked great, but it was lukewarm and very greasy. Oh well; so much for “if the locals go there, it must be great food.”
Dinner was prawns with garlic and vermicelli at a little place near the Temple Street night market. It had lots of garlic, and it was very good indeed.
