Graz–Jan. 16, 2025
Again, not a lot to talk about today.
Here’s another street sign, this one with a plaque commemorating the person after whom the street is named.
As best I can translate it:
Franz Ritter von Hauslab 1798-1883
General, cartographer, and military diplomat. He introduced the height color scale for land maps and sea charts, and he concerned himself with the geological recording of the Erzberg (a mountain in Austria). The laterto-be Kaiser Franz Joseph (I.) gave him military training. Hauslab commanded the artillery at the defense of Vienna in 1848 as well as during the Hungarian uprising of 1849. He was considered an expert on the Orient.
Early in the evening, I had some coconut curry chicken with vegetables and rice from a kiosk at the Griesplatz area:
Later on, I went to an 8 p.m. weekly meeting of people who gather to speak in English. From 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. they speak German, so I went primarily for that part. You get to the restaurant where they meet by going through a passageway which opens up onto a nice little square. (I took these pictures earlier in the day while I was in the area.) The meeting was good, but the acoustics in the restaurant are terrible and it was very loud, so it became difficult to hear what some of the people were saying.
There’s a display window for a bookstore in the passageway with all sorts of cool things in it.
