The hotel’s breakfast buffet is really great. Here are some pictures of the food:

cereals and fruit rolls various other things

After breakfast, we headed towards Mainz. Instead of going to the Mainz Hauptbahnhof (main train station) we took an earlier train going to Mainz Kastel. From that stop, it was a fairly short walk across the Theodor Huess bridge into Mainz proper:

Walking a bit further, we saw a very interesting door near the Carmelite cloister.

St. Christopher’s church was destroyed in the second World War.

A further walk through town produced the following pictures:

One building had a set of benches whose base was made of stones from ancient times. (No captions on these photos)

Cathy got a picture of me taking pictures...

We then went to the main train station. The statues of the Blues Brothers is above an establishment called “Das Crazy,” which is a video store. People in Mainz love to ride bicycles, as you can see from this parking lot full of them.

From there we went to the Mainz Cemetery; Cathy enjoys taking pictures of the old headstones. If you want to see those pictures, go to her Facebook page.

After a few wrong stops on the streetcar, we found the Roman Theater. From what I understand, a construction crew was digging up the area and came across these ruins of a Roman theater. It was sort of a letdown, but I’m glad we went to see it anyway.
