Las Vegas 2012 - 12 August

Back to the convention today. The first session I attended was with Walter Koenig and George Takei. George Takei is currently hard at work on his musical, Allegiance. Walter Koenig is writing some science fiction stuff. They both dissed William Shatner a bit.

The afternoon session was the four captains. First was Kate Mulgrew (Captain Janeway; Star Trek: Voyager). She was just fantastic; had the audience entirely captivated.

Next was William Shatner who was, well, William Shatner.

Next out was Avery Brooks (Captain Sisko; Star Trek: DS9). He introduced Cirroc Lofton to come up on stage with him. Hate to say it, but I nearly fell asleep while he was talking. Definitely not the most magnetic speaker around.

Finally, Scott Bakula (Captain Archer; Star Trek: Enterprise) came out. He commented something to the effect of “Wow, there are people all the way at the back of the room,” and ran down the aisle to the back of the room, then back to the stage. The audience, of course, went wild. (I was sitting near the back, and I was able to see him from about six feet away.) Most of the questions for him concerned Quantum Leap, the series he’s best known for.

Then, all four came on stage and answered questions, including what was their favorite charity. Mulgrew: Alzheimer’s, Brooks: United Negro College Fund, Shatner: Any charity that uses horses as therapy animals, Bakula: Arts Education.

Immediately afterwards, William Shatner introduced his documentary film, “Get a Life!” which is an in-depth view of why people get so involved with Star Trek; it was filmed at the convention last year. It was well-received, and a very good film indeed.

Memo to self: No more sandwiches. I stopped at Jose’s Famous Tortas on Tropicana on the way back. The sandwich was OK, but not really great. As this has been my second disappointing sandwich experience, I’m going to avoid them for the next few days.

(No pictures from today, sorry. Nothing particularly caught my eye.)
