Los Angeles, CA–April 13, 2022

I went to MOCA (the Museum of Contemporary Art) today; here are pictures taken on the walk over there.

Graffiti with purple alien
Wall art: Welcome to Historic Filipinotown (with person in spacesuit at left)
Right half of mural; HiFi (Historic FilipinoTown) as text, person in space suit at right
Utility box with painting of a nun, and words “Good Shepherd”
Gateway arch to Historic Filipinotown; geometric shape in middle

This was a long mural showing the lifetime of the universe. (An ambitious project, to be sure, but nicely done.)

Timeline of universe: the big bang
sea creatures and jellyfish
plants and reptiles
dinosaurs
Whale at left, volcano at right
modern day at left, pre-columbian people at right

More artwork...

Person holding spray paint can at left; at right is a stylized pencil with eraser having eyes and mouth
Building with sign for Bob Baker Marionette Theater

The next picture is art on the side of this building. Apparently the theater is still in business doing shows.

Whimsical drawing showing clown playing horn, monkey playing banjo, and walking drum and cymbal set
Mural depicting mexican peasant woman, and a latina woman in center
Continuation of mural, with farmworkers in middle and lilies on right
Mosaic sign for Vista Hermosa Natural Park with flowers and irregular stone base

MOCA

The building on Grand Avenue is not particularly large. The artworks are fairly interesting, though.

Painting on exterior of MOCA of black women in green miniskirts
Outline of house made of plastic trash bags.
Rectangular structure made of mirrored bricks

There was a similar structure behind this, and a narrow corridor that you could walk through.

Small wooden houses, painted with multiple colors.
Rooms lit by green, red, and blue fluorescent bulbs

You could walk into rooms behind these and see some blended colors. They made people put on shoe covers first, though.

Painting with red, purplish-red, and red horizontal stripes

Yes, this is a Mark Rothko painting.

Bronze long-handled, wide-brush broom.
Abstract black cloth artwork near ceiling
Aluminum sculpture reminiscent of a mobius strip
Meshwork “nested figure 8” mobile
board with nails in it, and a hammer attached with a thin chain

This is Painting to Hammer a Nail In by Yoko Ono.

Large black structure with tree-root like extrusions

This one, titled Witch House, is creepy, especially if you read the list of materials.

Collage of photographic negatives of a hand holding a variety of photos
Abstract sculpture of irregularly shaped concrete bricks on a base of three rectangular metal blocks
Abstract metal sculpture of intertwined arms, chained to walls, resting on red and gray exercise mats
Tall thin sculptures of man and woman

No modern art museum would be complete without some sculpture by Alberto Giacometti.

Humanoid figure made of stacked shiny metal blocks.
Large multi-colored quilt with plain and plaid pattterns, hanging from ceiling.
Large Latino/a-motif tapestry
Two frames with white canvas

OK, at first glance, you might think “What kind of crap is this to show two blank canvases?”

Closeup of frame showing a thin purple border.

But if you look closely, they aren’t blank; there’s a thin purple border that, once you notice it, you can’t take your eyes off it.

More Wall/Street Art

I went from MOCA to Chinatown, figuring I’d see some new and interesting things there. Then I remembered I had already been there in the not-too-distant past, so I turned around and went back to the hotel where I was staying.

In the downtown area, the anti-vaxx crowd had put up a lot of stickers. I have blurred out the QR code and URL, as I don’t see any need to give them any more publicity.

We are Free / Free to Work / /Travel / Learn/ Question/Speak/Pray/say No brought to you by the Crosshair Collection
Silhouette of man throwing hammer and sickle in garbage can. Text: keep your country clean
Text: “Kids are not guinea pigs” with needle and slash through O of “NOT”

OK, back to better things.

Mosaic of vegetation and flowers. Text: “My garden filled with fruits you may behold”
Several barrel cacti
Metal rectangle at entrance to Grand Park, with words ”the park for everyone” stencil-cut into the metal in many languages
Flag poles with current and historical US flags
SANTO STP NIVEK HOPES painted on side of freeway wall; homeless encampment on surface street above wall.

If you notice, on the street above the wall, there’s another of the many homeless encampments that you find all throughout Los Angeles.

Detail of graffiti showing roman columns with inscription CITIVS
6-story tall mural of latina woman and doves; orange painted wall on building to left
Buildings with vertical rectangular painted panels in multiple colors.
Mural of many latino/latina faces
Parking sign with decorative multi-colored pastel leaf shapes

This design is the logo for a shopping/residential complex.

Golden dragon at entrance to Chinatown

I got to this point when I realized I didn’t need to visit Chinatown again, but I might as well take a picture.

Sticker: “We didn’t cross the borders. The borders crossed us.”

I passed by the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, which doesn’t look like what you would expect a cathedral to look like (if you’re thinking of European cathedrals, that is.) Took a couple of pictures here and saw a very modernistic building in the background and went exploring. It’s the Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts.

Exterior of Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels
Cathedral bells of varying sizes
View of Ramon Cortines School upper floors with curving metallic “ribbon” surrounding two floors.
Side of school, canted metal structure and round window-like portal at left
Front of school with angled cylindrical structure in background.

And finally, back on Temple Street to the hotel where I was staying.

Sticker showing dog colored in red, yellow, green, and blue; text: DivaDogLA
Graffiti of artists’ names and initials
Circular fountain in courtyard of hotel
Painted utility box showing helicopter over a cityscape
Shield with crown on top, surrounded by olive branches
Mural with latino/a imagery
Wall painting memorial to Kobe Bryant and his daughter
Fence with red geometric shapes in background; painted with words “Build Community”
Exterior of business with two large eyes at top, and hand with sign “Play Hard”
Drwing of hand with fingers curled in; thumb is a person’s face.
Advert showing a young black man in t-shirt and jeans; for music album “Thoughts Left Unexpressed” by Yung Gwop
Wall painting on front of barber shop showing hand holding electric razor

Advertisements

This truck caught my eye; the slogan is catchy, if not grammatically correct.

Advert on side of truck for Smirnoff two-fruit drinks: Two fruits are funner than one

More adverts for oat milk.

How much do I have to learn about Oatmilk to try it? (Picture shows blackboard with Oat + milk ≠ oatmilk)
Do All my Clothes have to be hemp to drink oatmilk? (Someone wrote “bitches” after “my”)

Someone made an editorial comment on this ad, and yes, it’s offensive (and it should have an apostrophe after the s), but I found it quite amusing.
