Vienna–April 9, 2019

As per usual, click any picture to see it at a larger size.

I arrived in Vienna a couple of days before the ReasonConf (dedicated to the ReasonML programming language). I got in during the early afternoon, so I had some time to walk around the hotel area. I have only a very few pictures of the typical buildings and sculptures that I like to photograph:

Flat pieces of metal in shapes of people and large rectangles Gothic style church with multiple spires
Abstract fluid white sculpture This one is in Sigmund Freud Park.

Almost everything else is...

Signage

The hotel I’m staying at is near the University of Vienna, and they apparently have some sort of public transit ticket that you can buy (translation below the picture):

Man crashing into wall at Platform 9 and 3/4 Student ticket? It’s not sorcery with your support.
Poster with large QR code I only understand the train station with your support.

This May, the Austrian University Student Union (ÖH—Österreichische Hochschülerinnen- und Hochschülerschaft) is having elections. Here’s one from the Socialist Student Association:

Woman with arms crossed

The text reads:

We want more!

An opposing group, JUNOS, (Young Liberal NEOS), has these posters, with the “want” in “We want more” crossed out and replaced with “do,“ as in “We do more.” I doubt Evergreen Valley College’s Associated Student Government could get away with the second poster.

Feet of two people in bed, one lying on top of the other. Text: More highlights in studies for a satisfactory University of Austria More highlights in studies for a satisfactory ÖH

Signs from a burger restaurant, a store that cells cannabidiol (CBD), and a hair styling salon:

This van for a heating and air conditioning company just looked cool. The words at the lower left translate to “hot. cold. warm.”

The this logo for the building that house the collections of the Medical University of Vienna has an interesting switch from a serif to sans-serif font:

Josephinum: Collections of the Medical University of Vienna

This is a weathered wall advertisement for a curtains/materials/flooring store:

Weathered advert on building: Friedrich Otto Schmidt - Curtains, Material, Flooring

This one became more interesting the more I looked into it:

Poster showing woman looking at dead child; flipped-over car in background Movie Poster: The Children of the Dead

At first, I thought, “Well that sounds like a not very fun movie.” Then I looked closer and asked, “What is the Nature Theater of Oklahoma, anyway?” If you go to their web site, their home page is pretty weird. It turns out they are a performance art group out of New York. So who knows, the movie may actually be really amazing. But I don’t think I want to spend a couple of hours to find out.

Stickers

There seem to be a lot of interesting stickers on light posts, etc. The first one, courtesy of the Communist Youth of Austria, is my favorite:

Sticker with three small panels showing a knife and fork turning into a hammer and sickle. Text: EAT THE RICH
Drawing of computer with smiley face and 1s and 0s on screen. Text: Binary is for compuers
Sticker with text: Spitting Ibex and somewhat abstract picture of a spitting ibex

And I’d really like to see the whole sticker that this came from:
