Munich–January 29, 2017

Today’s first museum was the Haus der Kunst; along the way there I went down Ludwigstrasse, named after King Ludwig I, who was quite the king, apparently.

Between this museum and the next is the Eisbach, which contains a river wave for experienced surfers only. Here’s my video of it. It was fairly cold that day (about 3° C, maybe), so it was fairly amazing to see people out there surfing. The bridge over the river is a place for people to put their romantic padlocks:

Bayerisches NationalMuseum

The Bavaria National Museum was my next stop. There was the standard amount of religious art and overdone (to my eyes) kitsch:

Exterior curved area of building
bayerisches nationalmuseum
Ornate religious shrine
Porcelain figurines of noble lords and ladies
Jewelled display of cameos of court nobles
Baroque clock surrounded by procelain flowers
Closeup of porcelain flowers
Statue of Hermes
Sculpture of crowd of middle ages people

They had a display of musical instruments; the square one is called a bassetthorn, which is some sort of clarinet.

Horns from middle ages; look like trombones

In the basement was a display of “krippe,” which are usually large dioramas of nativity scenes.

complex nativity scene with courtyard and fountain
Scene with 1800s style people at outdoor cafe
Crowd scene with men on horseback; all in middle east dress
