Your First Word
This word, καλά, is the Greek word for “well”, as in “I’m doing well.” In fact, this is the word you say when someone asks “How are you?”
You’ll notice there’s an accent mark over the second α. This tells us that the last syllable gets the emphasis. This isn’t just something we've put into this lesson to help you; when you read a Greek newspaper or book, you'll see that all the words with more than one syllable have accent marks on them. It’s very important to pronounce words with the emphasis where the accent mark tells you it goes. If you put the emphásis on the wrong sylláble, people will have trouble understanding you
In order to ask, “How are you?” in Greek, we’ll have to introduce four more letters.
