A Declined Noun
When we matched a pronoun and verb, that was called conjugating. When we match a noun with its case, that’s called declining. Here’s the word άντρας declined in all its forms:
| the man | ||
|---|---|---|
| Singular | Plural | |
| Nominative Case |
ο άντρας | οι άντρες |
| Genitive Case |
του άντρα | των αντρών |
| Accusative Case |
τον άντρα | τους άντρες |
Here’s a concrete example of how you use the cases in a sentence:
Ο άντρας είναι ένας ράφτης.
The man (nominative) is a tailor.
Αυτό είναι το βιβλίο του άντρα.
This is the book of the man (genitive). or
This is the man’s book.
Εγώ βλέπω τους άντρες.
I see the men (accusative plural).
Just as formation of the plural depended upon the gender of a noun and its ending letters, so does the formation of the cases depend upon gender and ending letters.
