The verb “have”
The verb “have” is one of the most useful ones in any language. In Greek, it is a regular verb. This means that there is a fixed pattern for forming its endings. In the table below, we’ve shown the ending for each pronoun in red.
| Singular | Plural | |||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| First Person | εγώ έχω I have |
εμείς έχουμε we have |
||||||
| Second Person | εσύ έχεις you have |
εσείς έχετε you have |
||||||
| Third Person |
|

Many Greek verbs fall into this same pattern for changing their endings (or conjugating.) We call this group of verbs the first conjugation verbs. Here are a few more of them, given, as always, in the first person form:
| English | Greek |
|---|---|
| see | βλέπω |
| buy | αγοράζω |
| drink | πίνω |
| know | ξέρω |
| take | παίρνω |
| give | δίνω |
Thus:
| I see. | Εγώ βλέπω. |
| She gives. | Αυτή δίνει. |
| We buy. | Εμείς αγοράζουμε. |
Of course, now it’s time to practice...
