Berlin–May. 29, 2025

In Berlin for an event that interested me. Not a great number of pictures, since I’ve been otherwise occupied.

Most of these pictures are from the area from the Wittenberg U-Bahn stop to the Zoologischer Garten U-Bahn. Today was „Christi Himmelfahrt“ (Feast of the Ascension of Jesus Christ), so the shops along the main Kurfürstendamm road were closed, and it wasn’t greatly crowded.

Wittenberg U-Bahn Station

A rather grand-looking building.

You’d expect a map of the transit system near the ticket machines. But no, there weren’t any that I could find in the station at all.

There were, however, plenty of old-time-ish posters on the wall:

Poster of progress in streetcars. Verkehrstechnik aus Berlin / Pionierfeistungen von Simens

Traffic technology from Berlin / Pioneer celebrations from Siemens

Poster of man with beard holding a „Der Tagesspiegel“ newspaper with headline Gründlich / Sachlich / Kritisch

Headline reads: Thorough / Factual / Critical

Old-style bus. Headline reads Gestern * Heute * Morgen / B.Z. die größte Zeitung Berlins

Yesterday - Today - Tomorrow / B. Z., the largest Berlin newspaper

Further along the road, this fountain which was drained for repairs.

And this one down the road from the fountain.

This is Kaufhaus Des Westens (Ka De We), a big department store. Normally the gates would be open on Thursday, but, again, today is a holiday.

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

I first saw the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church from a distance, then got some closer photos.

Miscellanea

Red colored bear holding a try with three beer glasses above his head.

I liked this logo

Inflated man with moustache in chefs hat with waving arm.

An inflatable above one of the food stalls.

Gray circles of various sizes with smaller red and blue circles in the interstices

Looks like someone was inspired by the Ishihara test.

Brom-bastich lecker

Brombeer is the word for blackberry; they used it as word play with “Brom-bastically delicious.”

signage

The apostrophe looks wrong to me, but I have seen several more instances of it, so I am guessing that really is the standard.

DIN Plaza

Speaking of standards, this was unexpected. I walked back on a different street and passed through DIN plaza. What, you might ask, is DIN 🇦🇹? It’s the German Institute for Standards, founded in Berlin in 1917 as the national standards organization. It represents German interests in European and international standardization. (loosely translated from the sign in the second photo)
