Graz–May. 24, 2025

First day of the new bus routes that are substituting for the streetcars. Going from my place to Roseggerhaus wasn’t bad at all. While I was waiting for the bus, some older lady started talking to me in the local dialect of German, which I didn’t understand very well. I responded to what I thought she meant, but used standard German (the only kind I know), but she didn’t take the hint and kept talking in dialect.

There was a big soccer game going on later in the day, so the bus was moderately crowded. I stumbled when the bus started up suddenly and bumped into a couple of younger women. I said “Excuse me” and “I swear I have not been drinking,” and they laughed. One of the women responded, “Not yet.” We all had a good laugh about that.

Going back from Rossegerhaus, on the other hand, was a real production. Here’s more information about it than you could possibly want.

First, the bus detours off Annenstraße before it gets to the main train station.

Going from the station to Alte Poststraße takes a left turn at the intersection of Eggenberger Straße and Köflacher Gasse (the red circle on the map). That left turn takes a while because it’s a busy intersection. Why can’t it go straight through on Eggenberger Straße (the east-west road)? Because they’re updating the streetcar depot, marked as Remisenzufahrt on the map between the two circles. The depot update is scheduled to last until 4 July. After that, I hope they will be able to go straight through on Eggenberger Straße.

Then, when you get back to Eggenberger Straße and Alte Poststraße (the blue circle on the map), there’s another fairly long wait for the light to cycle there.

Given that it takes me about 12-15 minutes to walk back from the main station to the apartment, it might be a tossup between using the bus and walking when the weather is good.
