Went to two museums today.

Contemporary Arts Museum Houston

(Link to their web site.) Upstairs was an exhibit by a variety of artists:

Three ceramic vases Tecate Stele by César Martinez: Aztec-type design made from flattened Tecate beer cans Glass sculpture of Virgin Mary on wooden pedestal.

This series, Words, consisted of photos overlaid with single words:

Photo of football players overlaid with VIAGRA in large yellow letters Photo of Day of the Dead shrine, overlaid with word ABUELITA (granny); photo of pink garbage bag overlaid with word PINK

And other diverse works:

LATINX, a poem: THEY / THEM / THEIRS not YOURS / YOURS / YOURS Sign in all caps: HE'S A BAD MOTHER; sign in cursive: that’s what your mom said / that’s not what your mom said 3-D piece with two large artist paintbrushes and “Droopy Dog” at end of each handle

In the basement was an exhibit by an artist named Cary Leibowitz. The museum had a warning sign that told parents they might want to look at the exhibit first before taking children through it.

leibowitz roses are reddish/violets are bluish/mrs henry kissinger/still doesn’t realize/her husband is/jewish Purple rectangle; at left “Gore Vidal!”; at right “Paul Lynde!” Shit or / get off the pot / me loves me / me loves me / not Pinwheel made of pennants: Life Sucks / Drop Dead / Misery Rules / Go Sadness Various posters: self-esteem 5 cents / misery loves company/LOSER line forms here Diptych: on left, “You look like a clown”; on right, a green panel with a red dot Candlesticks and salt shakers with writing on them: I can’t do this / Man / Ray Ceramic pitcher with writing: U bring out the best suicidal tendencies in me.

The first of these paintings has the word The George Washington, circa 1776, the second is The George Jefferson, circa 1976.

Ship with white sails: “The George Washington, circa 1776” Black ship with tan sails on brown water: “The George Jefferson, circa 1976”

More artworks:

1700s painting of man with strip of magazine: DIAL NOW GUYS ARE WAITING! taped at top. Blue poster with two squares. Left square has arrow pointing to right and words “I’m with stupid” - right square is blank Multiple non-identical posters: “Stop copying me” interspersed with “Do these pants make me look Jewish?” Diptych: square on left “hi Jewboy”; six-pointed yellow star on right ”hi” Multiple oddly-shaped posters labeled “Modern art 5 cents”

Here’s one of the things they must have been referring to with the warning sign:

Poster in decorative font: Marcia Tucker / Chicken Plucker / Oyster Shucker / Long Distance Trucker / RSVP / Mother Fucker

And finally, this one, situtated outside the restrooms:

Attention! All art critics must wash hands before leaving!

I had to go to CVS to get a couple of things and passed a small park and a somewhat impressionistic advertisement for loft townhouses:

park with fountain and small bridge Advert for loft town homes; impressionistic looking exterior

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

(Link to their web site.) This museum has one of the best displays of pre-Columbian art that I have ever seen:

Gold knife with man in headdress as handle Row of small gold lizards Smiling terra cotta figure sitting on haunches, has gold earrings Pitchers in form of owl and feline Pitcher in form of animal in light and dark brown checkerboard terra cotta Man with crocodile-like head and feathered headdress Jars in form of human heads with wide-open mouths Whistle with bird-like creature Large urn with dog-like creature at top Terra cotta laughing man and standing woman Terra cotta seated man wearing large necklace with animal teeth Cup with engraved figurines Terra cotta puppies Terra cotta man with small puppy perched on head. Seated ball player, hands on knees, legs crossed Animal figure with geometric forms on hat

And here is a semi-random variety of photos from the rest of the museum, which was nice, but couldn’t compete with the pre-Columbian:

Glass bottles and vases in Islamic style Greek and Roman statuary Limestone and glass sphere, cube, and irregular shape Blue ceramic vase and bowl Blue stone and terra cotta horses Bust of napoleonic-era general Panoramic view of modern art gallery

I am not great at recognizing faces, and this painting had me totally confused; it looks like the artist painted only two or three people multiple times:

Miscellanea

A utility box and a positive message painted on a sidewalk:

Red sun with face and yellow rays; subtitled “El Sol” “Be yourself” painted in blue on sidewalk
