“To Be” Sentences

You’ll need these sentences when you want to ask questions and give simple answers for learning new words:

What is this?
This is a pencil.

We'll need these new words (see a quick note about them):

	this thing (near to speaker)
	that thing (near to listener), or "that thing" that was mentioned in a previous sentence
	that thing (far from speaker and listener)

and these words:

	person (honorific)
	friend
	who? (the question word)
	what? (the question word)

And, since the words and end with a consonant, we'll need the subject marker:
