Guadalajara 2010 - July 10

I took a quick trip to Guadalajara, Mexico, to see the sights and visit a friend who lives there. I got there in the evening on July 9, and we went to see a symphony performance of De Falla, Reinecke, and Beethoven. Of the three, I liked the De Falla best.

On Saturday, I went to the big market in the middle of town, el Mercado Libertad (also known as Mercado San Juan de Diós). It’s really huge; three floors covering most of a city block. Hover over a picture to see a caption; click any picture to see it in larger size.

Here are pictures from the area around the market. The first picture is a building, Hospicio Cabañas, which has had many functions over the years, and is now an art museum. They had an exhibit of Jose Clemente Orozco’s art.

This is an interesting sign for “ahogados,” which are sandwiches that are “drowned” in a chile sauce.

Here are other pictures from around the downtown area. Not all of them are captioned.

Later in the afternoon, we passed this ad, which my friend pointed out to me. He thought it was very clever.

Advert for learning CPR; looks like one of those horses in front of a grocery store.
